The Kemmerer Rangers golf team competed in Green River at the Rolling Green Country Club against most of the state’s southwest area teams on Tuesday and Wednesday. Trevan Benson once again was contending for the top spot as he has done all season long as he shot a 141 for the outing, just one stroke off the pace of Rock Springs’ TJ Atkinson who ultimately edged Benson with a second-day 69 in his final round and a finish of 140.

Overall, the Rangers saw a seven-stroke improvement from the first round to the second as a team. The biggest stroke savers were Bronson Hubbard who shot an 89 after carding a 96 on the first 18 holes. Bowman Sandal also had a six-stroke improvement from day to day, hitting a 90 on Wednesday after shooting a 96 on Tuesday.

“We’ve seen tremendous growth this season,” head coach Jennifer Benson responded. “Our boys put in a lot of hard work over the summer, and it has really paid off. Most of them have improved by 20 strokes or more and are now consistently breaking 100. In Green River, five of the eight boys shot in the 90s while the others posted scores in the low 100s. We also had one player place in the top five at every tournament, including two runner-up finishes.”
Benson credited the players for their consistent efforts.
“Our seniors provided strong leadership during practices and tournaments, setting a great example for the younger golfers,” she added.  “Together, they have been two of our strongest competitors, pushing the team to higher levels. With the progress we’ve made and the determination this group continues to show, we’re heading into the state tournament with a pretty strong team and high expectations.”

As a team, the Rangers shot a 703, finishing in front of Lyman and Rawlins. The Rock Springs boys took the top team score with a 616, followed by Star Valley who shot a 645.

In the girls team scores, Star Valley had the best score of 597, followed by Rock Springs, Jackson and Pinedale. The 2A State tournament will take place in Douglas, hosted by Niobrary County, on September 19-20.
