Director Angi Bruce of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department shared on the Weekday Wake-Up that public meetings around the state are helping shape next year’s hunting seasons, including proposed changes to mule deer and antelope in some areas.

Public input has already been a central feature of the season-setting process. Bruce said Game and Fish held more than 30 meetings statewide to gather feedback and to let residents “hear each other, too.” In Lincoln County, one meeting drew 14 participants; while modest in number, Bruce praised those who spoke up. “You know, I wish there was 50 individuals, but I’m really glad for those 14 who did come out and share their thoughts with us,” she said.

One proposal under consideration would increase mule deer licenses on the Wyoming Range following the heavy losses in the severe 2022–23 winter. “There’s been a lot of conversation regarding the Wyoming Range mule deer and if it’s the right time or not following the bad winter of ’22–’23 to increase those licenses and increase that opportunity available for mule deer hunting over there,” Bruce said. “We have gotten a lot of comments, a lot of people weighing in, and that’s exactly what we want. Some of those thoughts: Is it premature? Is it not? People are evaluating that and giving us their thoughts.”

Bruce reminded residents that written comments can still be submitted online before the Game and Fish Commission finalizes next year’s seasons at its April 21–22 meeting in Riverton: “I will tell you that our commissioners read every single one of those and take them to heart.”

She said the final commission vote will determine what next fall’s hunting seasons look like. “The April Commission meeting is where those decisions will be made,” Bruce said.
