Lincoln County Treasurer Jerry Greenfield stepped into the SVI Radio studio to promote the Wyoming Property Tax Refund Program, which offers a refund of up to 75% on the previous years paid property taxes.
(0:00) Weekday wakeups with 98 and the spur catching up with Lincoln County Treasurer Jerry Greenfield, (0:05) who’s in studio today. Treasurer, you were just mentioning that you’ve been traveling (0:09) around Lincoln County a little bit recently at one of our senior centers and property taxes (0:14) again have been brought up. Brand new topic for you, right? You haven’t talked about property (0:17) taxes much, have you? Oh, I don’t deal with property taxes at all.
(0:22) Well, there’s a couple options for limiting property taxes for property owners in the (0:30) a couple months ago, the deadline for that 25% exception has come and gone. But there’s another (0:35) one for up to 75% you were telling me about. So let’s get the word out on that.
How does this (0:40) work? Well, it’s very simple thing we got to remember. There’s basically two different (0:48) programs. There’s the long term property tax refund, which is 50%.
And that has to be filed (0:55) through the assessor’s office at the county. And by the fourth Monday of May, which is coming up (1:03) fairly, fairly soon. So if you haven’t filed for that, you need to file for that.
But for this (1:09) year’s property taxes that you’ve currently are paying for the 25 year property taxes, (1:14) the state has come out with a program, this money comes from the state coffers, (1:20) it comes directly from the state to you. And it’s up to 75% of what you’ve already paid for. (1:29) And there’s some requirements that you got to follow, like a copy of your income tax and a (1:35) copy of your paid receipts, those kinds of things.
It’s very simple. But I’d sure urge everybody (1:43) that can qualify, you got to be a 25 year resident to qualify for that. And but get this file, (1:51) get it into the state by the first of June, so that the state can refund the money directly to (1:56) you.
Excellent. And you mentioned 25 years resident in Wyoming doesn’t have to be at the same property (2:03) location or address, right? Just just in Wyoming somewhere. Just in Wyoming.
That’s correct. (2:08) Excellent. Lincoln County Treasurer Jerry Greenfield in studio.
So just to go back to (2:13) where you started two different programs, ones of 50% ones of 75% are they both state programs? (2:19) No, one of them is is state statute, which is the 50%. That’s still in the statute. The other one, (2:28) I look at it as a redemption for the legislature because they didn’t get anything done in the (2:35) legislature.
And that’s the 75%. Now that’s got a ceiling of $141,000. If you’ve got (2:44) if you’re at that level, then you’re not going to get 75% back, you’ll get 65% of the 75% back, (2:53) it’s a little convoluted.
But if you’re under 121,000, in your income tax for last year, (3:00) then you would qualify for 75% of what you’ve paid into your property taxes for this year. (3:07) Treasurer, so you talked about some of the documents, you need tax returns, (3:10) receipts and whatnot. How does someone go about applying for these discounts and rebates? (3:15) There’s a form that needs to be filled out.
And that comes directly, or that’ll get directly (3:22) mailed into the state of Wyoming, you can go to my office in Kimmer or the office here in (3:28) Star Valley, pick up those forms, and fill them out, take them back to the office in Kimmer or (3:35) here in Star Valley, we will get them to the state. All right, and deadlines approaching pretty (3:40) quick. You said both of them ending at towards the end of May, right? That’s correct.
All right. (3:45) Treasurer Greenfield and studio and again, these two additional property tax relief programs (3:49) available from the state of Wyoming. Anything we missed that you’d like to touch on today while (3:52) we got you? Well, yeah, there is one thing that I’d like Lincoln County to know.
And that’s (3:58) yeah, property taxes is a pain, but 50% of our property taxes is paid for by industry. We’re (4:06) pretty fortunate. I didn’t realize how these different counties don’t have industry to help (4:13) out with property taxes.
So their their tax issues are a lot more expensive than ours are. (4:19) So anyway, I just want everybody to realize that industry is important, not only for jobs, (4:26) but also for taxes. That’s Treasurer Jerry (4:28) Greenfield this morning.
It’s all part of the weekday wake up on SVI radio.
