Wagner and Benson are State Champs for Kemmerer Golf

It wasn’t really a surprise but that doesn’t take away from the terrific outing for the Kemmerer High School duo of Tazlyn Wagner and Trevan Benson who both won the 2A individual championships in Evanston on Wednesday after a two-day state tournament.
Both have been atop the leaderboard for their entire high school careers as they wrap up their junior golf campaigns. Wagner has been dominant since setting foot into Wyoming high school competition and continued her winning ways with a 22-stroke victory at the Purple Sage Golf Course. Benson repeated as champ after winning as a sophomore and very nearly has a three-peat himself after finishing as the runner-up in his freshman season.
Wagner was in the driver’s seat after shooting a 72 on Day 1, a full 21 strokes in front of eventual second place Ruth Needham of Thermopolis. Needham did shoot an impressive 77 on Day 2 but that was still one stroke behind Wagners’s 76. Wagner finished her tournament with a 148 while Needham was runner up with a 170. Kelsie Griffin of Ten Sleep was third with a 180.
Thermopolis did win the girls 2A title with a 580, well in front of Ten Sleep’s total of 641. Sundance was third. No other schools had a full team.
Benson shot two rounds of impressive golf with a 73 on Day 1 and a 69 on Day 2 to win by a total of 14 strokes over Wright’s Colton Gerler. Benson finished with a 142 while Gerler shot a 156. Zaide Bears of Hulett was third with a 164.
Gerler did help lead Wright to the 2A boys team championship with a two day toal of 695, nearly 30 strokes in front of second place Thermopolis. The Rangers placed fifth with an 804.
