Wagner and Benson both claim individual championships for Kemmerer Golf

It was a distinct possibility for Kemmerer to claim both individual champions at 2A State Golf in Douglas this weekend and that’s exactly what happened as Tazlyn Wagner and Trevan Benson both claimed top honors to end their respective sophomore seasons.
For Wagner, it is the second championship in Wyoming after winning as a freshman. She won by 17 strokes a year ago and this season won the title by a dominating 28 strokes with a final score of 148. Kelsie Griffin of Ten Sleep was a distant second with a 176. Wagner shot a 73 on the first day and a 75 on the second day.
For Benson, he finished atop the standings after placing as the runner-up in his freshman campaign. This time he shot a 151 to finish six strokes in front of Tongue River’s Easton Lewis. He and Lewis were tied after the first round after they both shot a 77.
“We are so excited,” remarked head coach Jennifer Benson. “Both Taz and Trev stayed locked for two rounds on a very tough course [with] tight fairways and fast greens.”

As a team, the Rangers placed 7th with a two day total of 812. Sundance won the 2A boys team championship with a 708. Thermopolis was second with a 735.
Wagner was the only girl playing for Kemmerer. The Thermopolis girls won the 2A championship with a total of 559. Ten Sleep was second with a 630.
“Our team did well overall,” Benson added. “Bowman Sandal had a great chip-in to hole-out for par. Easton Backman had a very awsome drive on Hole 16. Sam Swann finished his last State tournament with his best round at 103. Charlie Lozier had one of his best rounds on the first day. They all had a great time playing on a great course.”
