A promising new opportunity may be on the way for the local economy: Cuby, a manufacturing company focused on building affordable homes, is considering relocating to Southern Lincoln County. This move could significantly impact the community by potentially creating up to 300 jobs.
Brian Muir, Administrator for the City of Kemmerer, explained that Cuby Homes has engaged not only with the city council but also with the zoning board and the South Lincoln Economic Coalition to discuss their vision for manufacturing homes. “They’re looking at more affordable ways to get homes up and running quicker,” Muir noted during a live interview on SVI Radio, reflecting on the challenges in the construction industry, where a shortage of skilled workers is increasingly felt.
What makes this opportunity particularly exciting is Cuby’s interest in establishing a manufacturing plant in Kemmerer itself. According to Muir, “They’re not just wanting to build homes in Kemmerer but also want the manufacturing facility here.” This facility would not only serve the local market but also supply components to other regions where homes are being constructed.
To facilitate this potential growth, the city is looking at available sites. Muir mentioned that the city owns about 94.5 acres of land east of the Justice Center, which has already been earmarked for light industrial use. An amendment to the comprehensive plan has been approved to prepare this land for development. “We’re trying to stay ahead of the game,” Muir said, emphasizing the proactive steps being taken to welcome this new industry.
The local council and zoning board are currently assessing the necessary zoning changes to accommodate Cuby, which would need around six to seven acres to operate effectively. Muir expressed optimism about these developments, stating, “We think we have a good possibility for them.”
As the city navigates these discussions, Muir underscored the importance of not only attracting Cuby but also exploring similar opportunities for other manufacturers. The arrival of Cuby could spur economic growth and provide solutions to the current housing shortage in the area.
Kemmerer stands on the brink of significant economic development, and as Muir noted, it’s a collaborative effort to create a vibrant future for the community. The potential relocation of Cuby represents an important step forward for Southern Lincoln County.
